Teaching and research partnership with the Departamento de Ingeniería Matemática of the Universidad de Concepción, Chile (1999-2002)

The cooperation between the Departamento de Ingeniería Matemática of the Universidad de Concepción and the Institute for Applied Mathematics of the University of Hannover has been supported by the DAAD since 1998. It was initiated by Prof. E. P. Stephan in Hannover and Prof. G. N. Gatica in Concepción. Both groups work in the field of numerical analysis and partial differential equations.

The aim of this partnership is the cooperation in research and teaching, including the exchange of professors, postdocs, PhD-students and students and the development of a joint curriculum and evaluation system, making possible the mutual recognition of achievements.

Since the beginning of this project in 1998, 7 professors, 3 PhD-students and 9 students from Chile have visited Hannover while 2 professors, 4 postdocs, 6 PhD-students and 1 student from Germany have been in Concepción. For the Chilean students and PhD-students German lecturers held 6 block-courses in Hannover and 4 block courses in Concepción. The main topics were

  • "hp-version of the Boundary Element Method"
  • "Multigrid- and Domain decomposition methods"
  • "Splines"
  • "Numerics of Partial Differential Equations".

So far there have been 6 master-/diploma-theses and 7 PhD-theses jointly guided by German and Chilean professors. In addition 9 further PhD-students have been indirectly guided in Concepción by attending the block-courses of lecturers from Hannover.

Supported by the mutual visits intensive research has been achieved in the field of "Efficient Computation of Coupling of Finite Elements and Boundary Elements". Up to now 12 joint publications have been produced. The ongoing research has been meanwhile extended to further topics such as adaptive schemes for advection-diffusion problems.
