GAMM Juniors' Summer School 2019:
Space-time FEMs for parabolic and hyperbolic conservation laws

The Summer School on Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (SAMM) is organized annually by the GAMM Juniors with financial support from the Dr.-Klaus-Körper-Stiftung and the local institutes. The SAMM 2019 was organized by Philipp Morgenstern and Natascha Krienen under the topic "Space-time Finite-Element Methods for parabolic and hyperbolic conservation laws", and took place at the Leibniz University Hannover, Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover on August 7–9, 2019.

The summer school addressed PhD and advanced undergraduate students from engineering sciences or mathematics.


Lectures: Programming tutorials (using MATLAB):


The Registration fees were as follows.

academic attendees: 50€ (includes lectures, programming tutorials,
coffee breaks, conference dinner)
industrial attendees: 100€ (includes lectures, programming tutorials,
coffee breaks, conference dinner)
accompanying person: 30€ (includes the conference dinner only)
accompanying child
(from 3 to 11 years):
15€ (includes the conference dinner only)


The program lasted from Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon, consisting of lectures in the morning and programming tutorials in the afternoon.
The conference dinner took place at the Georgen-Terrassen.
The contents of the lectures are outlined as follows.

  • basic concept of space-time discretization
  • advection-diffucion equation
  • compressible Navier-Stokes equations
  • variational formulations for mechanical applications
  • implementation for large-scale problems
  • variational formulations in Bochner spaces and in anisotropic Sobolev spaces
  • instationary Stokes system
  • (canceled)
